ENVIRONMENTAL GRANT PROGRAM
Our commitment to protecting the environment runs deep and we’re proud to support the efforts of local organizations that share our vision.
Established in 2005, our annual Environmental Grant Program offers funding for innovative, community-based environmental projects that improve, restore or protect the watersheds, surface water and groundwater supplies in our local communities.
We are pleased to offer assistance to community partners to help make a positive impact on the environment, and we encourage you to apply.
To qualify for Environmental Grant funding, a proposed project must be:
- Located within Kentucky American Water's 14-county service area (Bourbon, Clark, Fayette, Franklin, Gallatin, Grant, Harrison, Jackson, Jessamine, Nicholas, Owen, Rockcastle, Scott and Woodford counties)
- Address a source water or watershed protection need
- Completed between May and November of the grant funding year
- Establish a new or innovative program or a significant expansion to an existing program
- Be carried out by a formal or informal partnership of at least two organizations; and provide evidence of sustainability.

The 2022 program:
Kentucky American Water awarded one American Water Environmental Grant in 2022.
Bluegrass Greensource, in partnership with Copperhead Environmental Consulting, Inc., Keepers of the Creek – Hinkston Heroes, Licking Valley Adventures, Bourbon County and the City of Maysville, received a grant of $4,304 for an innovative project to evaluate the water quality of Hinkston Creek in Bourbon County to determine if the site is viable for future mussel propagation efforts.
The 2021 program:
Kentucky American Water awarded two American Water Environmental Grants in 2021.
The City of Sadieville, in partnership with Scott County Habitat for Humanity, received a grant of $5,000 for a watershed cleanup and repair project along Vine Street and Angle Alley in Sadieville to alleviate storm water run-off issues currently affecting the corridor and those traveling through it.
The Friends of Wolf Run, in partnership with the Lexington-Fayette Urban County Division of Parks and Recreation and the Southland Park Neighborhood Association, received a grant of $3,800 for the Southland Park Waterway Adventure Playground in Lexington. Grant funds will support a new green stormwater infrastructure feature being built at the park, to include plantings for the wetland area as well as educational signage.
